Educating vs Impressing vs Intellectual One-upmanship-ing.
Last week Bill Gates published an article about his conversion from a meditation skeptic to believer. Here's one of the more relevant lines from the piece:
It's apparent we've also fallen into the trap that academics, journalists, and - apparently - meditators find themselves in. We're often too worried about impressing each other with techno-babble and obscure applications that we make it pretty intimidating for would-be converts to join.
In a recent meetup hosted by a traditional, well-known bank, cryptocurrency figures were asked to speak about blockchain applications. A significant part of one talk was centered around zk-SNARKs. But when the floor was opened for Q&A, the first question asked was about how a distributed ledger works in the real world.
How. A. Distributed. Ledger. Works.
One lesson to take away from this, I suppose, is know your audience. But the larger picture here is to shift our focus away from each other for a second and double down on education. Take the time to write primers. Use your social media account to rehash fundamentals. Write like the success of this space depends on people outside of us adopting and using cryptocurrencies.
