Chinese government researchers isolated more than 2,000 animal viruses, including deadly bat coronaviruses, and carried out scientific work on them just three miles from a wild animal market identified as the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic.
RT @tedcruz: This raises obvious & serious Qs, which much of the media have ZERO interest in answering. Did the virus escape accidentally from a Chinese lab (that we know was studying bat coronaviruses near Wuhan animal market)? Why did the CCP cover up the outbreak? https://t.co/i3R040lnch

This is not a bioweapon. There's no evidence that it was artificially created and trans-species jumps happen all the time. The genetic evidence is pretty clear this hopped over from bats.
It's possible it was released because of a lab containment failure, but it's just as likely the CCP wasn't covering anything up but simply using strongarming to get control of information outlets, as it has been known to do.
No conspiracies are needed. It's just an authoritarian government reacting badly to an event that makes it look incompetent.
The possible origins of 2019-nCoV coronavirus Botao Xiao1,2* and Lei Xiao3 1 Joint International Research Laboratory of Synthetic Biology and Medicine, School of Biology and Biological Engineering, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510006, China 2 School of Physics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China 3 Tian You Hospital, Wuhan University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430064, China * Corresponding author: firstname.lastname@example.org Tel / Fax: 86-20-3938-0631 The 2019-nCoV coronavirus has caused an epidemic of 28,060 laboratory-confirmed infections in human including 564 deaths in China by February 6, 2020. Two descriptions of the virus published on Nature this week indicated that the genome sequences from patients were 96% or 89% identical to the Bat CoV ZC45 coronavirus originally found in Rhinolophus affinis 1,2. It was critical to study where the pathogen came from and how it passed onto human. An article published on The Lancet reported that 41 people in Wuhan were found to have the acute respiratory syndrome and 27 of them had contact with Huanan Seafood Market 3. The 2019-nCoV was found in 33 out of 585 samples collected in the market after the outbreak. The market was suspicious to be the origin of the epidemic, and was shut down according to the rule of quarantine the source during an epidemic. The bats carrying CoV ZC45 were originally found in Yunnan or Zhejiang province, both of which were more than 900 kilometers away from the seafood market. Bats were normally found to live in caves and trees. But the seafood market is in a densely-populated district of Wuhan, a metropolitan of ~15 million people. The probability was very low for the bats to fly to the market. According to municipal reports and the testimonies of 31 residents and 28 visitors, the bat was never a food source in the city, and no bat was traded in the market. There was possible natural recombination or intermediate host of the coronavirus, yet little proof has been reported. Was there any other possible pathway? We screened the area around the seafood market and identified two laboratories conducting research on bat coronavirus. Within ~280 meters from the market, there was the Wuhan Center for Disease Control & Prevention (WHCDC) (Figure 1, from Baidu and Google maps). WHCDC hosted animals in laboratories for research purpose, one of which was specialized in pathogens collection and identification 4- 6. In one of their studies, 155 bats including Rhinolophus affinis were captured in Hubei province, and other 450 bats were captured in Zhejiang province 4. The expert in collection was noted in the Author Contributions (JHT). Moreover, he was broadcasted for collecting viruses on nation-wide newspapers and websites in 2017 and 2019 7,8. He described that he was once by attacked by bats and the blood of a bat shot on his skin. He knew the extreme danger of the infection so he quarantined himself for 14 days 7. In another accident, he quarantined himself again because bats peed on him. He was once thrilled for capturing a bat carrying a live tick 8. Surgery was performed on the caged animals and the tissue samples were collected for DNA and RNA extraction and sequencing 4, 5. The tissue samples and contaminated trashes were source of pathogens. They were only ~280 meters from the seafood market. The WHCDC was also adjacent to the Union Hospital (Figure 1, bottom) where the first group of doctors were infected during this epidemic. It is plausible that the virus leaked around and some of them contaminated the initial patients in this epidemic, though solid proofs are needed in future study. The second laboratory was ~12 kilometers from the seafood market and belonged to Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences 1, 9, 10. This laboratory reported that the Chinese horseshoe bats were natural reservoirs for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) which caused the 2002-3 pandemic 9. The principle investigator participated in a project which generated a chimeric virus using the SARS-CoV reverse genetics system, and reported the potential for human emergence 10. A direct speculation was that SARS-CoV or its derivative might leak from the laboratory. In summary, somebody was entangled with the evolution of 2019-nCoV coronavirus. In addition to origins of natural recombination and intermediate host, the killer coronavirus probably originated from a laboratory in Wuhan. Safety level may need to be reinforced in high risk biohazardous laboratories. Regulations may be taken to relocate these laboratories far away from city center and other densely populated places. With the outbreak of the new coronavirus (now deemed SARS-CoV-2) , Dr. Shi is one of the authors that published s [this paper](https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.01.22.914952v1) from January 23, 2020, saying that, stating that it is “of probable bat origin,” and “*Pairwise protein sequence analysis of seven conserved non-structural proteins domains show that this virus belongs to the species of SARSr-CoV… the same cell entry receptor—angiotensin converting enzyme II (ACE2)—as SARS-CoV*.”
In the original paper published in 2015, Dr. Shi stated the same thing:
“*Using the SARS-CoV reverse genetics system2, we generated and characterized a chimeric virus expressing the spike of bat coronavirus SHC014 in a mouse-adapted SARS-CoV backbone. The results indicate that group 2b viruses encoding the SHC014 spike in a wild-type backbone can efficiently use multiple orthologs of the SARS receptor human angiotensin converting enzyme II (ACE2), replicate efficiently in primary human airway cells and achieve in vitro titers equivalent to epidemic strains of SARS-CoV.*
Interestingly, in a footnote it says, “*Cells were originally obtained from Fort Detrick*.” Army's biodefense research center at Fort Detrick [was recently closed](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/05/health/germs-fort-detrick-biohazard.html) due to [biosafety concern](https://wjla.com/news/local/cdc-shut-down-army-germ-lab-health-concerns). [Petition urges US gov’t to clarify army lab shutdown as doubts grow over COVID-19’s origin](http://en.people.cn/n3/2020/0321/c90000-9670852.html). It also noted that a large number of English news reports about the closure of Fort Detrick were deleted this month, displaying a “404 not found” page. On March 13, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian retweeted a website link that provided further evidence that the virus originated in the US. The website speculated that the virus had gone from Ft. Detrick to e-cigarettes to Hawaii then to Wuhan:
Why Fort Detrick military lab was shut down? Why flu-season came earlier all of sudden? What caused vaping pneumonia? Why not allow people to do coronavirus testing?
[P.R.E.D.I.C.T was a research program working for 15 years to identify and prevent pandemics. ](https://i.redd.it/to9skmeyl0g41.png) The US government quietly shut it down in October 2019 - just two months before first cases of coronavirus in Wuhan. Just another interesting coincidence, isn't it true?
It becomes evident, that we cannot continue in biological research infinitely, as the risk gradually increases. Soon or later we'll get into situation, when such a research would lead into global pandemic undeniably.
No one is saying that it's racist to say the disease came from China, they're saying that some people's responses were racist (i.e. assaulting Asian people or making memes about avoiding Asian kids)
I wish this stupid idea would just die, God.
Go look at the media. Let's not even go to the media, let's take late night garbage television.
Jimmy kimmel did. https://youtu.be/uH3LqegZ8eQ 1:05 in.
This is just typical.
Anytime trump calls it that, he is doing it to defy media who will call him racist.
That's not someone being called racist for saying it originated in China. That's him unnecessarily trying to change the name of something. I don't think it's so much to defy the media, it's that he's a genius in branding and knows what will rile up support from his base. The generous interpretation is that he's trying to use the name to refer to the place of origin, but the criticism is that regardless of intent, it will further discrimination against individual Chinese people. It's debatable whether it's racist, but this is not an example of someone being called a racist for stating that the virus originated in China.
... which is not an example of of people being called racist for stating that the disease came from China.
No one is saying that it's racist to say the disease came from China, they're saying that some people's *responses* were racist (i.e. assaulting Asian people or discriminating against them)
Fuck china and there backwards ass country. Hopefully when this bullshit is done the global community has nothing to do with them. Completely sanction chinese goods and destroy their economy until they smarten up.
No no they’re not
>But British news accounts also reported over the weekend that some of the stalls at China’s so-called “wet” wild animal markets, as they reopen, have begun once again selling bats and scorpions and resumed questionable practices such as slaughtering small animals right at the site.
How hard is it to at least skim the article you are commenting on
If it were that easy to cause a pandemic, we would see them at a higher frequency than we actually see it. In ww2 the Japanese threatened to destroy key infrastructure using biological agents. The militaries of the world have had nearly a century to prepare for this contingency. This is a manufactured crisis.
There's already a nature paper about how they could have made the virus more deadly. This was probably part of research or just released as a warning. Still, that knowledge doesn't help with mitigating it
Are we against bioweapons? Isn't deterrence and mutually assured destruction still the best path to peace?
(In fact, consider that bioweapons do not depend on massive state-run mobilization to be created, like the atomic bomb did. Biohacker teams could create them - which means, decentralization of deterrents)
Please read the source before sharing... That site feels more and more like loving to spread fake news. All the links it has in the text are internal and it has no external source to prove what it's claiming.
Its more likely they were simply researching coronaviruses, having had SARS and MERS in the last while and containment broke. While I dont trust China, Im not going to accuse anyone of making bioweapons unless theres genuine proof. Its far more likely to have been more innocent research and mistakes made followed up by the massive CCP coverup
