Subway’s mission statement is “to delight every customer so that they want to tell their friends – with great value through fresh, delicious, made-to-order sandwiches, and an exceptional experience.“. This is difficult and important work, and every employee at Subway signed up because they are excited about this mission.
“I’ve worked on Wall Street, I’ve worked in government, and as an entrepreneur. With cryptocurrency, we’re doing something totally new that could change the world. That sets us apart, not just from other financial services companies, but from almost any other organization.“

I like them and I fully support their choice to not be political at this time.
“economic freedom” from CRYPTOCURRENCY LMAO
The best part is where they offered people $100K to quit and the journalists were shocked when 5% of the company took that deal.
Good for them. It's about time a company posted something like this.
ahh yes the toxic social activism of acknowledging employees come from diverse backgrounds, bring diverse skillsets, and require more than money for motivation. do what your boss says even when it makes zero sense and hurts the company in the long run or get rekt.
This cause has been embraced by the culture warriors (including on /r/buttcoin ... jesus that post is a trash fire) but, of course, the reasons are internal:
the only mission is number go up, and the only politics are number might go down. Also Brian is still pissy at people answering back to him last year and this year.
To elaborate a bit on what steveeq said: they'll sit there and talk like they care in an effort to make money. If they thought that saying BLM sucked would make them more money, they would do it.
To provide another example, my dad used to manage large metropolitan and resort hotels for Marriott, Hyatt, Wyndham, etc. during the 80s, 90s, and early 00s. He said that they all were like "help us fight global warming (the popular term back then) by rehanging your towels to let us know that we don't need to change them" when the reality was that it helped them save a ton of money on chemicals, labor, and linens which was the main reason they did it.
Take it to /r/buttcoin
Sorry but there’s been a fair bit of toeing the line lately wrt to relevancy
Overall, a magnificent trash fire:
coinbase has played many political games to manipulate bitcoin in the past. it is also a custodial wallet so you don't really own your money with them. they could be hacked and you would lose everything. maybe good for beginners in bitcoin but not for serious people, as a wallet.
Wish more companies did this. I currently work for a company that loves to put articles on the employee portal about diversity and how much they care.
Meanwhile, I was in a car accident involving some idiot hitting my car with a warrant out for his arrest. It was a company vehicle and my company insures that company. I put in a claim and have had to call them EVERY SINGLE TIME to get more information. They haven't reached out once. The company is hiding behind the statement that "they can't prove that it was stolen". Not sure how, since he was pulled over and they had the guy's license, but that's what they keep saying.
Since they, surprise surprise, can't get a hold of the guy who hit me, they can't say for sure that he stole the vehicle. The only other reasonable explanation is that he either had access to the truck as an employee, or an employee let him use it in which case you'd still think they'd be responsible.
Bottom line is this, they're not doing the right thing, they don't care, they care more about $4k than they do about an employee despite making over $2 billion last year. There are other claims by people he hit while being chased by the police and I guarantee they likely have worse situations than me.
Submission statement: the CEO of Coinbase has made a blog post where he promises to build an efficient and valuable company rather than to engage in political activism. In his words, Coinbase is putting its own mission first, and fostering unity of purpose rather than political division. I found this really interesting and relevant to the IntellectualDarkWeb sub.

This may start a trend. I'm sure the internal reaction was VIOLENT. He of course followed up by then offering severance (4-6 months, and can not lapse your options!!!), no hard feelings, to anyone who wasn't on board.
I have heard the Google and to a lesser extent FB exec teams think it's a real pain to deal with all the internal activism. They really struggle to keep people focused.

This modern "stakeholder relationship" view of how companies should work really adds conflicting priorities and reduces focus to mission and business results. It causes a lot of distraction, a lot more in fighting, a lot more suspicion of co-workers... and one would expect, less effective companies. Have heard of some companies where leadership spends more time diffusing activist memes and employee grievances than they do managing the business.
Submission statement: JBP often talks about fixing yourself before trying to fix the world. I think this post by the CEO of a major company exemplifies that - he pledges to focus on providing a good service to his customers rather than peddling political agendas.
you see, the all-consuming focus on profit above all moral and humanitarian considerations has no political components whatsoever. i am very smart
Chud says chuddy thing.
Same shit was said about doing business with aprtheid era south africa.
It’s virtue signaling. Coinbase could give a damn about Bitcoin’s future as a decentralized store of value.
I think this article is a well articulated viewpoint and I hope that more companies move in this direction. There is a reason why for all those years that it was considered a social faux pas to discuss politics and religion in polite company and especially at work, the potential for division, hurt feelings and retaliation can very easily cause deep irreconcilable schisms in even the most talented workforces.
I just hope that this doesn't however transform into something more insidious, a way to muffle very important voices for change with respect to diversity at tech companies, though I have a sinking feeling that it will
You win some. you lose some I guess.
- Making business pay for healthcare
- Making business take political stances
- Making business responsible for caring for the sick / needy / orphans / etc.
Let business make maximum money and distribute it to employees and owners, then let everyone who received money deploy it to their favored interest groups / politicians / activisms / social programs / charities / etc. Much less conflict in regards to business - thinking about them, working for them, differing theories about their role in society, etc. Businesses provide value and earn profit for doing so.
And for things like healthcare, let government handle it, why we let business pay for healthcare in USA is so absurd.
So Coinbase has a good model - stop wasting the whole day getting worked up about political arguments and shaming each other for perceived slights. You can do that after-hours on Twitter and FB as much as you like.
There is a broader philosophical idea being put to work here: your professional life and your personal life should be able to be separated.
That goes both ways: let me "leave" work when I'm done, but also ask employees to "leave" their personal lives when they're at work.

People that need their company to match unrelated causes to them, quit! Go live as a pauper or maintain your subsidized life making room for people that want a job or want to also focus on the laser guided mission!
I will never forgive Coinbase for pushing so hard for centralizing Bitcoin by increasing the block verification time for nodes. I'm happy though that Bitcoin withstand their attack.
So thanks, but no thanks for this message about building a better world.
If you want to crypto, if you want privacy don't use Coinbase.
You can always use LocalEthereum to buy ETH anonymously and then transfer to a private wallet

> We won’t:
> Debate causes or political candidates internally when unrelated to our mission
> Expect the company to represent our personal beliefs externally
> Assume negative intent, or not have each others back
> Take on activism outside of our core mission at work
I wish more companies would take this position. I go to work to build great things and work with great people, not to talk about identity or partisan politics.
Trade unions or other examples of worker self management are the way to push these kinds of politics. Not all unions need to be the teamsters run by Jimmy Hoffa, the modern white-collar union would and could hardly represent it.

I have a friend who is a high level Google VP that is very active in advocacy for people less represented at Google and in the world, what I assume people here are referring to as identity politics (I'm VERY interested in hearing if there is a distinction I'm missing). It just occurred to me, maybe he, as a Jewish man, feels like he has seen this kind of thing before, and felt he needed to take a stand.
