Hopefully the acquisition helps them fulfill their mission, asteroid mining would be a huge boon to humanity. I'm reserving my excitement though, thus far Planetary Resources hasn't accomplished a whole lot unfortunately.
Now that is unexpected. It's a bit of an odd investment but I'm a space buff so not complaining. Can't wait until Musk gets into blockchain with Tesla or Solar City. Can't see how it would benefit SpaceX for the time being. Maybe in quality control?
Everyone here seems confused about what asteroid mining has to do with blockchain, but this is a great move.
Blockchain is all about enabling decentralized, distributed, asynchronous economic transactions. Asteroid mining and solar system colonization will require exactly such a system to flourish. At the same time, mineral extraction in space has the potential to be the biggest gold rush (literally and figuratively) in history, by many orders of magnitude (larger asteroids contain trillions of dollars of precious metal at current prices.) Blockchain would benefit massively if it were the technological underpinning for such a massive economic explosion.
Space operations are also necessarily physically decentralized (the solar system is a big place, with minutes or hours of ping between different bodies!) and any economic transfers will need to be asynchronous and peer-to-peer. Imagine you wanted to sell those thousand tons of pure silicon you just mined and refined to that solar-panel-building station nearby - if you had to send your transaction all the way back to Earth, have it confirmed by a centralized authority, and wait for the confirmation to get back to you, you'd never even bother. If you could both sign the transaction in your local Plasma chain, however, it would be finalized right then and there, and eventually would be re-merged to the main chain back on Earth, but you wouldn't have to wait for that. Much more efficient.
Obviously this is still all hypothetical and very forward-looking, but then again, so was blockchain ten years ago. I think both ConsenSys and Planetary Resources stand to benefit from this in the long run.
They are trying to pull an asteroid with more PM's on it then have been mined in all of earths history to show how much better crypto is than PMs
I'm so jealous of billionaires having their own space programs!
Maybe if the price goes to $10 million per ETH then I can have my own space program too 😀
Ethereum Co-founder and ConsenSys Founder Joe Lubin said, “I admire Planetary Resources for its world class talent, its record of innovation, and for inspiring people across our planet in support of its bold vision for the future. Bringing deep space capabilities into the ConsenSys ecosystem reflects our belief in the potential for Ethereum to help humanity craft new societal rule systems through automated trust and guaranteed execution.
So, more of a talent acquisition then.
I remember seeing a statement from Chris Lewicki that he was looking into trying to do an ICO to fundraise for Planetary Resources. I imagine that will probably happen now!
When ICO? Take my ETH!! Holy shit this is like my wildest dream come true.
The only question is why they want to do asteroid mining when Ethereum is going to PoS.
Exxxellent!!!
The match is literally made in heaven. Blockchains are a great way of both keeping tabs of who own what in space as well as controlling and safeguarding tons of robotic asteroid miners. All for it!
I remember the anticipation I had for the first unveiling of planetary resources and their full plan to mine asteroids. I bought in on the kickstarter (which never delivered) and followed their journey to develop their first satellites that was suppose to be part of their full system. Some really interesting ideas, so I feel a tad sad that they couldn't fully realize their goal.
What did this asteroid company even do???
Edit: Ok they literally do nothing other that talking about what they "will" do.
Edit Edit: Ok so they launch craft that will essentially scout asteroids for resources
It seems every rich person now wants their own space program. I'm assuming Lubin is rich enough he can just do that.
Edit: It seems people are trying to connect this with blockchain tech. I guess it could be used in some ways, but really this is not something that goes together. Someone wanted 'space', and bought it.
Well shit I was applying to jobs there last month... time to double down on that
Well, they say that worlds first trillionair will be an astroid miner :). So maybe , they just want to become the first trillionaires.
Holy sh!t. I’ve been tracking PR for a while with great interest. Basically, the two most intriguing companies in the world right now joined forces. This is beyond cool.
