I love the project. I believe you are focused on the crypto markets at first - have you considered offering some World Cup markets? It's the biggest sports betting event every 4 years.

@BrettRichey I'm no longer a full time employee at Gnosis (Ambassador and Founding Member), so don't know the current plans for that offhand. I'd recommend tweeting to them.

How can token holders serve as a check & balance against protocol devs?
1
Matt Liston
@AlokVasudev In most current decentralization focused blockchains, protocol devs have the authority to govern the exception (hard forks), while token holders (in a PoS system and through social pressure and selling power) and miners have the ability to veto the governance proposals. This is an important balance for current blockchains which must consistently innovate to stay relevant. Over time, this should shift toward decentralized governance of the exception and decentralized veto. The proposals for the upgrades may come from a combination of community proposals and alternative governance systems (liquid democracy, futarchy).

What are some major gaps you see in this space that are ripe for developers?
1
Matt Liston
@Graham-McBain Education initiatives, oracle marketplaces and mechanisms, reputation systems, layer 2 infrastructure development for Ethereum (without starting an Eth 2.0 chain), scaling consulting (specialized state channel development for example)

Jonathan Miller
Hi Matt. Can you help me understand your decision to use a "dutch-style auctioning system" for your ICO why the result was different from your expectations?
1
Matt Liston
@Jonathan-Miller
Why: Balance raising limited amount with not immediately selling out / causing a tx fee bidding war / jumping onto the market
Result: Too much demand at the time

As someone interested in building out the future of crypto, I find it hard to learn more deeply about crypto's specialized areas. Take decentralized governance for example. Reading about Aragon, Colony, and Gnosis futarchy is amazing, but where can I find academic (or otherwise comprehensive) texts that go more into detail about this stuff? Do they exist? There are many avenues I want to explore; they're just so dark. Maybe I should eat more carrots.

Thoughts on new distribution / allocation mechanisms , which ones do you like ?

What do you think the future holds for crypto?

What are some of the most important projects tackling crypto ethics right now?
0
Matt Liston
@bentossell Ryan Selkis' project Messari which is building an open data library for crypto projects; Coin Center, which is not exactly tackling project ethics directly, but is doing an excellent job communicating with US regulators; Brooklyn Project - https://thebrooklynproject.consensys.net/ ; Gnosis and other prominent Ethereum projects, which working on best practices internally

How do you think reputation/expertise can be expressed in a decentralized network?
0
Matt Liston
@AlokVasudev This is one of my favorite difficult open problems. I think initially we will see specialized reputation/expertise systems, ie. alternative credentialing and app specific reputation/expertise. I am also a fan of delegated staking models ie. I stake on someone who is providing blockchain development services, I earn a portion of their proceeds, my stake is slashed if they don't deliver fully on their contracts. Over time, I think these systems can move to one or several open standards for reputation, which will iterate on an existing proposal for decentralized reputation like EigenTrust, and gradually build network effect for a generalized system.

What are the 5 standard things ICOs are doing wrong that they could easily do right?
0
Matt Liston
@bentossell unnecessary/poorly designed tokens, raise less money, don't market to an audience that doesn't understand the technology, have an advanced white paper and alpha product before ICO, build on Ethereum

How did you get into crypto?
0
Matt Liston
@bentossell 2009, caltech talk on quantum digital cash (initial knowledge), 2012 https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Contract

Erik Torenberg
what's something you've changed your mind about in the crypto space in the last 6 months
0
Matt Liston
@eriktorenberg There is a chance that decentralization will not win. This horrifies me.

Erik Torenberg
What do you think are the biggest misconceptions people have about:

Crypto ethics
ICOs
Decentralization
The future of crypto
Gnosis
0
Matt Liston
@eriktorenberg
Ethics:
Belief - Blockchain will lead to a better future for humanity
Reality - Many Blockchain futures are horrifying
Decentralization:
Belief - Most blockchains are decentralized technologies
Reality - Most blockchains are run by a small number of validators (EOS - 21) and majority owned by several individuals/funds
The future of crypto:
Belief: It's about money
Reality: It's about trust
Gnosis:
Belief: It's about betting
Reality: It's about information and risk

What's something you believe in crypto that few people agree with you on?
0
Matt Liston
@eriktorenberg I'm cryptospiritual

Erik Torenberg
@eriktorenberg @malloc8 Can you say more about this?!
0
Erik Torenberg
What kind of shifts do you forsee in 2018 in the ecosystem?
0
Matt Liston
@eriktorenberg
- Serious software engineering teams will come in and start "Ethereum 2.0" chains
- Ethereum will begin to roll out scaling
- We'll see usable applications on Ethereum with specialized scaling implementations or using Cosmos
- Not all crypto funds will print money
- New entrants think less about money, more about what the technologies will mean for their future

Erik Torenberg
What are your thoughts on the Telegram ICO?
0
Matt Liston
@eriktorenberg irresponsible sale, pipe dream white paper. not to be completely ignored, signals next wave of experienced technical teams raising lots of money to do new blockchains.

Erik Torenberg
What is your take on decentralized exchanges
0
Matt Liston
@eriktorenberg will fundamentally transform how we exchange value. most important non-infrastructure layer technology I see for next 2yr.
