Crazy how much you/someone/Brewster can accomplish with just a “few“ millions. If u think about the millions of websites they have archived plus all the tapes, books etc they Digitalize and hoard (literally containers full of them)
I like these matching programs, but can anybody please explain to me how they work, and why they don't just donate an amount of $xxx instead of matching other donations and paying $xxx at the end. Aside from encouraging others to donate?
In addition to the other posts, some NGOs like the matching thing because it makes them less dependent on the single large benefactor, as their relative contribution is capped at the matching ratio.
The benefactor in turn might want to make their money go a longer way by encouraging other people to donate through the matching scheme, increasing the total benefit to the NGO.
you're right, the large donor is going to give the money anyway.
the goal is to create a sense of urgency for small donors because people will frequently make a mental note to give, but procrastinate and ultimately forget. But, if they feel that their contribution will be worth more right away, they're more likely to pull the trigger.
the large donor is happy to go along toward the end of encouraging more small donors to give.
That doesn't make sense to me.
If I'm matching them, but it's unknown how much or if I will donate, is it really matching anything? It's just a regular donation.
If I control the amount, someone else needs to do the matching.
Think about it the other way. You’re a rich, anonymous benefactor, and you’re going to write a check for $50k. What’s the best way to multiply that money? Tell people you’ll match their donation. It encourages the general public to throw $10 at it, thinking they’re getting something for nothing.
Hello /u/Kapelow! Unfortunately, your post was automatically removed because you do not exceed our karma threshold. This has nothing to do with rule violations, it just means that your account is either too new, or doesn't have enough karma. We have a treshold to prevent spammers from posting on /r/dankmemes.
The threshold was raised recently. You might've been able to post before.
Build up some comment karma by commenting on posts, and post some cute cats on other subreddits to raise your link karma.
Do NOT use subreddits that offer free karma, because you will be banned automatically from /r/dankmemes.
The reason we do not specify the exact amount, is that specifying that would render this useless as spammers
would adjust to these criteria.
I don't buy into donation matching. I think if those wealthy people and organizations who are matching donations want to donate, they can just go ahead and donate. If they care and have the money and are going to refuse to donate it unless people of limited means donate, I don't want to encourage that behavior. I also want to donate to the cause that I feel is most important for me to support, not to who has the best deal.
I just wish they wouldn't partner with orgs who restrict the downloading of material, it doesn't feel like the spirit of archive.org there are other places for content providers who want to be neurotic.
