I strongly suspect if people haven't stopped using Facebook by now, there is nothing that could stop them. I am pretty sure Zuckerberg could devour an infant and a puppy live on television and it wouldn't make a lick of difference.
It's like the Dead Kennedys put it:
Give me convenience or give me death.
It's the same with the two dozen or so human behaviors which perpetuate about 90% of the shit in the world.
Everyone's against animal cruelty but very few will give up eating meat.
Single use plastic bags at grocery stores...
I don't expect that to change. At least not where I live.
But it explains a lot.
Even I am still using gmail so, if I seem sanctimonious, I'm mostly talking about things I've even noticed in myself.
Almost all of us are hypocrites in one way or another.
For everyone who knows Facebook is bad, but can't get rid of it due to your family and friends, use your old phone (after a factory reset), and do nothing else with it. This limits the information they can collect.
Also, I use Greenify to kill the app as soon as I am done to prevent it from tracking from the background. It can auto kill when you turn off the screen, but it's finicky. Manual mode is simple as fuck though and works everytime.
I downloaded all my data from them, manually disconnected a couple oAuth accounts and deleted my profile permanently. This is because when I uninstalled the app from my phone they started texting me, no shit, texting me notifications. When I texted stop, my phone told me I needed premium SMS to do it. When I googled it, others were having the same problem with no real fix apparently. So goodbye Facebook. You toxic waste of my energy and resources.
Well, I'm sure you'd be very joyed to hear that this post has been removed. There is code in this article, but I will admit not much. However, there are posts on the front page of this subreddit right now that have no code in it at all. The line of what is allowed on this sub and what isn't is pretty blurry. Posts about what emails Torvalds or whoever have written about meltdown, spectre, nVidia, etc are all allowed even though there is no hint of programming in the content. A NYT article was allowed saying that CS grads don't want to work for Facebook, and even though that contained no code, it was deemed relevant because Facebook is a large programming employer in the US, but this post, which adds to the main idea of the article (ethical concerns of the company) aren't allowed.
> Well, I'm sure you'd be very joyed to hear that this post has been removed.
Yes I am. That's awesome.
> However, there are posts on the front page of this subreddit right now that have no code in it at all.
They should be removed too. In particular the one about Firefox getting a new video encoder. If it were in depth that would be fine. It's not.
It's better than it used to be (years ago this place was basically /r/technology), but /r/programming still flip flops about allowing generic tech news despite what the sidebar states. I'm not even sure if there is continuous moderation here. This place is a bit of a relic to times where admins themselves were subreddit owners. Looking at the mod list, there hasn't been any new blood in 8 years.
There is moderation. But I agree it’s annoying that reddit admins can sit on the mod team whilst putting in no work.
Given how terrible /r/technology is, it’s infuriatung to see people posting tech news items here. As though it’s should take it’s place.
It’s always interesting when the sort of issues get brought up. All the sudden people are upset about this when they’re not upset about their censorship campaigns. It’s like come on now you already know that this company and other major social media and information platforms are interested in maximum profit and maximum power.
I don’t disagree with you. However, I was being somewhat serious. I used to see EVERYBODY using Facebook. I used to hear everybody talking about “hey did you see that on Facebook?”
It seems like a Snapchat and instagram kinda world now.
To counterpoint your opinion, the news is flooded with reports informing what’s left of the Facebook community about how evil the Facebook corporation is. It has gotten so bad that there have been senate hearings.
I feel that if you are still using Facebook at this point, you’re choose to be willfully obtuse.
I have zero sympathy for those dumb dumbs.
Sure, to those that live under a rock and STILL don’t have a clue about how corrupt Facebook is... inform away. Keep up the good fight. Nothing wrong with making sure Facebook continues to crash and burn!
That's not a fair comparison.
Even though the negatives outweigh the benefits, things like Facebook and Google offer services that (on the surface) are convenient, so there is a pull to them.
Most have good alternatives, but they are not publicized at all, while on the other side, "Google" became a verb. I'm pretty sure most users here have used (or even currently use) the services offered by these giants due to sheer convenience, and only learned of the problems with them long after they started using these services.
