RT @Nate_Cohn: One thing I'll never understand is why some people assume there are no shifts in public opinion. Here's one: support for Black Lives Matter over the last few weeks and years https://t.co/liWfrBimoh
I've don't doubt the title or even the data. Just the narrative the media is pushing. Why stop at two years of data? BLM has been around for a while. I've just a hunch that this is just history repeating.
I'm here in bumblef___, PA so no protests or I'd join in. I'm on the police need to be reigned in side.
I've realized a lot of people aren't as racist as they are scared of change, which then leads them right to the "comfort" of racism that other, true racists provide through their outlets. This is especially relevant in areas like SWPA, where despite liberal politics in most places, development, jobs, and the social dials have not changed in a long time. People don't know what will happen if we make real change in the system, but instead of facing things head on, the real racists out there arm them with bigoted rhetoric and a bully who will back them up. The same concepts prevent change within the police system. It's been a fraternity for so long, people are scared of the unknown if they stand up against it.
I'll step off my soapbox now...
I agree with you completely, I don't find it a soapbox. But we're I feel like we're beginning to hit critical mass where it's not enough to be a coward about racism - one needs to actively be against it. There will and should be consequences otherwise.
We can already see that with PPG.
I think people are misinterpreting my comment. Put better, many people on this sub agree with me https://www.reddit.com/r/neoliberal/comments/h031gs/what_opinions_do_you_have_that_are_unpopular_on/ftk7l4k/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
So basically anyone but Republicans support the movement. I have lost all hope on the current republican party and its voters. Despite seeing the blatant crime in the video and the subsequent excessive use of force on protesters, they still worship "muh cop". These people will only change their minds when the boot in on their neck and even then some would quickly go back to pig worshiping as soon as it is on the neck on their "lessers"
I think the conditions of the current day have probably helped magnify it, though. Everyone is uncomfortable right now, there's a lot of people with a lot of time on their hands, and with all that tension bubbling and stress building, something was gonna give.
When things come to a head, it's usually pressure that makes it pop.
I also think there's a not insignificant portion of the population using the movement as a proxy movement against Trump. Lots of people who probably do support BLM but usually wouldn't bother to protest about it, they see this as a way to voice they're general displeasure with how the country is begin run.
Yup there were a ton of good people who just didn't have experience with what happens to black people daily. They always bought into the a few bad apples, isolated instances arguments. They are people who go about their day in a completely different world so couldn't imagine it.
Now not only did they get to see it first hand, but they have been able to see the police double down in their responses, injure non violent protesters, and then defend their actions. It is impossible to ignore a systemic problem when a 75 year old man gets pushed over and is bleeding from his ears and the police keep walking like nothing happened. It is easy for those people now to see it and say if they are willing to do that on camera what the hell are they doing to minorities off Camara. So now they understand it wasn't exaggeration, it wasn't a few bad apples, it is a big fucking problem.
