Young, Online and Fed on Lies: How a Whiny Generation Manages To Please Its Owners While Ignoring The Structural Basis Of Capitalist Inequality To Blame "Boomers" Or: How I Became a "Socialist" Without Opposing Capitalism, Imperialism or War.
It's a particularly US phenomenon, and I'm not sure it is related just to age. I suspect that both educational level and social cohesiveness play a role, too. In at least two other countries with which I am familiar, older people are less likely than younger ones to fall for bullshit 'news'. Both have a higher average level of education than the USA, and much less social division. Australia and Canada, which also have a higher overall educational level, but are more socially divided and diverse, are somewhat more prone to fall for 'fake news', but still do not reach the level that has taken hold in the USA, suggesting that overall educational level may be the secondary factor, and social cohesion most important. But there is not a huge amount of research available, so, who knows?
“With recent evidence that older adults are much more likely to disseminate fake news compared with their younger counterparts,
What I've also noticed (besides fake news itself) is a tendency for people to react to any story or opinion they disagree with or don't like by writing it off as "fake news".
Same thing happens on reddit all the time... and from much younger people. Say something someone doesn't like and you don't get a rebuttal or any rational argument to the contrary. It's usually an emotionally based rejection, complete with hostile language and insults.
No news (fake or otherwise) can ever be any better than the people who present it... or those who receive it.
You must not be American if you are just noticing it. Our president (Donald Trump - yes *that* Donald Trump if you can believe it) rages almost every day on Twitter about any story he finds unflattering as "fake news"
In that sense, he's hardly any different from many redditors. Like I said, don't agree with someone else's opinion or perspective? Emotional rejection complete with hostile language and insults.
I wasn't thinking about him when I wrote that. But that description fits quite well doesn't it?
I check sources, the author, cross reference. Even with diligence I get fooled a few times a year, for about a day. If a person is doing none of those things it would happen daily. Just yesterday The Hill put out this opinion piece and after checking the author he is known for being full of shit, egregiously full of shit. Then I am like OHHH that makes sense now.
Four recent studies found that older Americans are more likely to consume and share false online news than those in other age groups, even when controlling for factors such as partisanship.
Other research has found that older Americans have a poor or inaccurate grasp of how algorithms play a role in selecting what information is shown to them on social media, are worse than younger people at differentiating between reported news and opinion, and are less likely to register the brand of a news site they consume information from.
"fake news detector" Some
That's almost as good as the one where [some shadowy corporation was caught adding all sorts of left-prog sites to the "Russian" bin. And the Washington Shitpost (along with the New Yellowcake Times LOL) co-signed the bad check LOL)](https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/russian-propaganda-effort-helped-spread-fake-news-during-election-experts-say/2016/11/24/793903b6-8a40-4ca9-b712-716af66098fe_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.48c7149feeb2)
You [Pentagoons](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2011/mar/17/us-spy-operation-social-networks) sure try hard to reimpose [your Gatekeepers on us.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN26E410Euk)

So much [butthurt](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/wheres-iraq-young-adults-dont-know/) here. [So much....fake news](https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/the-propaganda-about-russian-propaganda).
Tell me: Did you vote for Single Payer With Cheese Obama, or Individual Mandate Obama with a Side of Drones?
the Drones and black-op torture sites were thrown in for lagniappe as they saw in N'awleans.
(edit - if only proglodytes had put on this much of a pretense about "fake news" when they were busy drinking purple imperialist Koolaid and gobbling up Iraqi Yellowcake. LOL you clownshoes ain't foolin nobody but the fools)
I deal with this all the time with my parents and older relatives, They grew up in a time where technology was simple and functional, They also grew up with a media that had more ethics. They tech they can learn, The modern media is a big issue and won't improve without some new laws...which is also problematic.
He's still married but my mother hates him, he has no friends, no hobbies, no interests, no vacations, nothing.
But he has his money and Fox News.
Money makes him feel better than everyone, Fox affirms that. From there they can say whatever they want and it's gospel because they are the only one's that are right about him, so clearly they are right about anything else.
Step 1. Get them off Fox News.
Step 2. Take away everyone's voting rights over 70 unless they take a cognitive test and use a Boomer friendly acronym to sell it to them. Any takers? They are too far gone otherwise and like a felon that has robbed every generation beneath them but instead of prison are free to spread propaganda as they wish...
Maybe we should debate voting rights for elderly for cognitive measures. You can't deny the increase in National Security as well as better funding across all afternoon groups not just their own. I'd bake in taking care of the elderly in return but we also have to take into account the national security damage they bring forth on social media. From the generation that hates communism and the USSR but love the crony capitalism of Russia. Putin isn't KGB.. it's actually FSB now...
Imo younger people are more likely to weigh evidence rather than jump to a conclusion over one piece of info. We have so much access to information via our phones and the internet that I, I believe, we understand that we know nothing and that knowledge is a constant pursuit.
I have heard what amounts to "I already learned once and I don't want to do it again" far too may times from far too many old people. They expect facts to conform to their long-held views because they are too lazy to actually think.
Older people are also more likely to vote and to be politically active in other ways, such as making political contributions. They are wealthier and therefore wield tremendous economic power and all of the influence that comes with it.
Older people should know better but they are too busy thinking they know everything because of age. I'm 48 and most of the people my age behaved like it on Facebook, which is partially why I deleted fb in 2016.
My mom is a pretty sharp cookie but I still remind her all the time not to click links in texts (such as the phishing one I received today claiming to be Well's Fargo), don't send anyone money for anything, don't meet men in private places (she's single and mingles), etc.
I will say this as an avid communist of over a decade: the elderly are only falling for one side's "hyperpartisan" (whatever that means) rhetoric. Young people are flocking to socialism in ways that make Bernie uncomfortable, old people are not. They are only going one way in their political evolution.
I do say there needs to be a sane fiscal conservative party but has a heart to check some hardline policies carried by propaganda (imo too far anywhere is bad whatever your flavor) but the boomers really made a shitshow out of capitalism. Not sure we are going full commie but I guarantee more sane policy with higher tax rates will be put forward even by capitalists. Ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.
If Boomers lost voting rights at 70 and Gen Zers gained them at 16 there would be a much larger focus on the future and not just Boomer tax cuts, condoms for themselves that they won't use in the nursing home, free Fox News through Cable subsidies for the elderly, and don't forget all of the medical resources.
Bake the Boomers self interest into the equation instead of letting them pack the courts and keep overwhelming power. They have had their time for 40 years plus. If children act like children they can't vote. Also remember old used to be 49 back in the early 1900s. Probably will be again the way this shit keeps up in their control.
