Trump ordered this to happen. He needs a fall guy. There is too much heat on Trump and he delegated Esper to direct the military to back down. And then we find out that Esper ordered the units back to DC.
Donald Dipshit should be impeached and thrown in prison for simply threatening to use US military forces against American citizens. We are his fucking boss and this motherfucker better hope getting fired is the most that he gets.

You are aware, that most of the looting and destruction is not from the people protesting? It is being organized by far right groups, gangs, thieves, entire out of state thieving groups, and a bunch of opportunists.
If the Insurrection Act is enacted I fear that the American experiment will be over. Trump loyalists vs. America loyalists vs. right wing vs. left wing.... all in our cities. For years we speculated as to whether or not US troops will fire on their own citizens and the ramifications that would cause. We do NOT want to test out that theory in real time. There has already been rumblings that active service members would renounce their duty if they were ordered to attack Americans. I don't even want to think about military infighting on the streets.

These groups aren't the same size though. Trump's demographic is older white people and racist organizations.
The middle of the road Republicans probably wouldn't side with Trump if it got to be a civil war. So you'd have a ton of young people on one side and a bunch of geriatrics on the other ..
I think if Trump did make a serious bid to actually send the military in the Republican party may actually split. Those that support Trump would never be forgiven by the voters meaning they'll lost elections which is what they truly care about. So unless they also try and make to end democracy and voting rights they will be forced to oppose him.
George Will, Mitt Romney, Bill Kristol, and (to a lesser degree Justin Amash) are all no longer even considering themselves Republicans for christ sake. Those were people who I disagreed with philosophically, but at the end of the day they were reasonable human beings. And they were the fucking standard bearers of the party few years ago. Does that go back to the way it was when this is all over? Or is this genuinely now what their party has become? The party of an authoritarian who has paid six figure sums to porn stars and stands for nothing but himself and making himself richer and more powerful while democracy crumbles??
I'm convinced (now) moderate Republicans would join the conservative Democrats to form their own party. The more progressive Dems will form their own party. It's overdue, to be honest. The former 2 groups have more in common than the latter 2.
You know, I have talked about this before but, something that I have really appreciated is Ron Paul and Bernie Sanders. Don't get me wrong, I disagree with both of them on fundamental levels, but at the very least they are ideologically consistent, and appear to actually believe and fight for what they believe (I am not talking about Rand... I could not imagine how awkward those family gatherings are).
Mitt Romney, at least, is willing to stand up to Trump for his beliefs, which is not something I can say for most of our politicians.
I guess, the round about thing I am trying to say is, regardless of how I feel about their political beliefs I appreciate politicians who truly believe the things they say they stand for and are consistent in those beliefs. People like McConnell who are willing to lick the emperors ballsack for a pat on the head are the worst kind of politician.
