While they took swift measures during the initial import of cases, they don't seem to have moved fast enough to stop the second round. Taiwan has put a retroactive quarantine on travelers from Europe (but not the US) and closed its borders to non residents. We'll see in the coming days if they can contain it again.

This whole beer virus shit is blown way out of proportion. Look at the age group it actually affects, 60 and up and those with health conditions. People from 0 to 50 are practically immune. The reason theres so many precautions and red tape being put everywhere is because we have old people running the show, all over the world, Gerentocracy at its finest.
Boomer virus kills boomers. So why the fuck didn't our government quarantine all 60+ people, and those with underlying health conditions, and let the rest of the fucking world go to work? Use bail out money to reimburse or otherwise pay the 60+ population still in the workforce, and see a slight decline with the economy, while the rest of the world serves drinks, types a report, answers a phone or sells a car. Our global economy could have handled quarantining the aging population and those with underlying health conditions, shit woulda been easy. Instead, we've let mass panic and fear take over our lives.
Instead, some old people got batsoup flu symptoms and everyone lost their shit. The media and politicians have been spinning shit so well that everyone is god damned terrified the world is going to end. And you know what? Mass panic, a run on the stores, the banks, people liquidating their stock accounts, and the government shutting down businesses for 30 days in some areas is so much more fucking worse than it ever should have been.
We deserve whatever recession we're in for, because honestly we all went along with it. We let these old, self entitled, rich politicians get us all overly scared. We all believed we'd contract the disease and die! Which is so far from the truth its comical. Do you realize who's really at risk? Do you realize who actually should be panicking? Who this uncertainty and fear mongering is for? Is it in behalf of those aged 0-50? Fuck no! China Flu is 0.02% fatal for everyone aged 0-50. Once you get to 60+ it jumps to 5% fatal, at 70+ it's like 10% fatal, and over 80 its 14.5% fatal.
Boomers have fucked us once more, for themselves. Selfish fucking assholes. They'll let the world burn if it means they get to live two more years and go on one more cruise or golf trip.
When unemployment reaches 20% because of this stupid panic, you'll see what I'm talking about. When millions and millions of people get displaced, downgrade their jobs and income, lose their homes and burn through safety nets, will the government bail them out? No. The shock to the global economy and recession/depression we're in for is going to be 1000x worse than Kung Flu. The real danger, the real threat, the real impact is going to be down the road, economically. We'll be paying for this shitty leadership and lack of sound decisions made by the self interested old assholes at the reigns. And we'll be paying for it the next 5 years, maybe more.
I'm angry. Angry at the government, angry at our leaders, angry at the failed situation and lack of preparation and resolve to handle this. I blame the old people leading the world. They don't give a fuck about you, or your kids, or the generations after them. They never have. Just look at the higher education system in America, set up by the old people to make exorbitant profits at the expense of the young and nieve. If you think their level of care and interest is in anything but themselves you're sorely mistaken.
I wish people would wake the fuck up. Realize the virus ain't shit to 99.8% of the people aged 0-50 and push back against the narcissists in office. The virus isn't the real threat. Not being able to pay your mortgage, car bill, or buy groceries for your family is, not this fucking weak ass Flu.
Do not get me wrong. I am not suggesting that we don't do a damned thing and let people die willy nilly. I'm suggesting government forcefully quarantine the only god damned people batsoup flu effects, the boomers and those with pre-existing conditions. If you're 60+ your employer sends you home, you keep getting paid and the employer gets tax credit or the government issues you a check, either or. And then you keep the healthy part of the population working, you know the 99.8% of people that will get through this.
Additionally, you throw up temporary health relief provided by the department of defense. Build a fucking hospital in 8 days like China did if you need more space. This creates jobs, provides additional relief if needed, blah blah blah. The vast overwhelming majority of people aren't affected by the virus.
Problem is, lot of people continue to visit their grandparents, old people still in the stores, those with health conditions going to work. The fuck is wrong with you people? Look at the fucking data, if you're old and you're out there willing to contract the disease you may as well be playing Russian Roulette, you've got the same odds.
To those at risk (60+ etc), this is serious shit, stay the fuck in your home. My fingers are tired, and your eyes are even more tired. Over.
>why the fuck didn't our government quarantine all 60+ people, and those with underlying health conditions, and let the rest of the fucking world go to work?
Good point, but the world revolves around the sick. It's like how people are such huge assholes to antivaxxers because MY KID CAN'T GET THE VACCINE, THEREFORE EVERYONE ELSE IS RESPONSIBLE TO KEEP MY SICKLY KIDS SAFE.
Absolutely no personal responsibility of taking extra precautions. Rest of the world has to accomodate them. Government supports these greedy, freedom hating assholes by arresting parents against vaccines.
And of course, to support the retarded old-age pension and healthcare system (which gets ever more expensive as new medical tech and drugs get developed to support sickly, dying old people who will never contribute again), governments import mass amounts of immigration, fucking over young workers (and Western society in general) all because they were looking for a way to support their old-age pyramid scheme
I mean, I would agree with you in some points, although you’re not telling the whole story as others pointed out (like the fact that also younger than 50 people need hospitalisation and there’s a danger of the health system being overloaded), but as soon as you called it the China Flu because you were angry, you lost my respect. Then you’re not better than the boomers you’re angry at.
Now go flip me some burgers.
You're so incredibly stupid. Glad I lost your respect when I used the geographic location of where the fucking god damned virus originated. You're probably one of those PC kids with your head so far up your ass you don't realize how stupid you sound.
[The largest infected group by far is people in their twenties](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1102730/south-korea-coronavirus-cases-by-age/)
[Coronavirus doctor says lung scans for young patients were ‘nothing short of terrifying’](https://nypost.com/2020/03/17/coronavirus-doctor-says-lung-scans-for-young-patients-were-nothing-short-of-terrifying/)
That 0.02% mortality for people in their twenties sure is terrifying. Thanks for your articles they keep the panic going.
Virus is meh for healthy people 0-50.
Economic crash incoming is still 1000x worse. But yeah, keep sharing memes and squirting purel.
>Virus is meh for healthy people 0-50.
Half of the people in the ICU from this in the us right now are under 65: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6912e2.htm?s_cid=mm6912e2_w
38% of the ~500 hospitalized so far are between 20-54
It’s the fact it has such a high hospitalization rate, even for those under 50, some even 20-30 year olds needing supplemental oxygen or ICU. There are perfectly healthy young people that need hospital care to get through, and that is insignificant to you?
Just wait for some videos to leak of inside some of these hospitals when they are completely overrun, then healthcare workers start dying and quitting leaving us extra fucked.
The people being hospitalized are the ones at risk, underlying health issues and age. Vast majority of peoples' bodies handle the virus like the flu, and many of them test positive for the virus and have 0 symptoms.
But you know, keep regurgitating what you hear on CNN and Fox News.
Uninformed fucking sheeple.
Yeah, his comment is incredibly shorted sites and only talks about mortality rates. It’s true that the old screw the young but it highlights a bigger problem. He says to risk health so that everyone can work. His thought process implies that working is the goddamn meaning for life and is why we’re all here. To use ourselves to prop up businesses and the market instead of staying home with our families.
Sir I'm leaving Wendy's.
But you're basically right it's a continual cyclical system where the old screw the young expecting young to discount their labor to bring the economy back up to a certain State screw them again and expect the same
Yup. I'll take my downvotes for now. Truth is going to be more painful of a reality than people want to hear, so a few fake internet points lossed is water off a duck's back. Godspeed.
And, would you like fries with that?
I already had to move back in with my parents in 2008. I would rather just take the 5% risk of dying instead of having to start over again like that.
I know I sound spoiled compared to the vast majority of the world but I compare myself to my parents and their generation who could buy homes and even vacation homes. I probably should have bought a million dollar house (average in my city) and had the government bail me out when like what happened after 08.
A poster with their eyes half open. Keep asking questions. Stay the fuck away from Fox News, CNN, or MSNBC if you care about knowing the truth. Fear machines beget fear. 99.9% of Americans distracted right now at what will really cause problems.
I mean did anyone read the imperical model*. That shit is supposed to happen. If you quarantine the place for a month or two, you will be able to decrease cases for like a month, then everyone would get back to normal for like a month or two, then you have to quarantine again until you find a vaccine. Shit is going to suck. That is why I am all in on puts
Sure this guy can summarize the contents of the paper but it would be nice to see a critique from an epidemiologist.
Also I’ve had this idea I’ve been kicking around:
I’ve been thinking about the application of opportunity cost when thinking about morbidity statistics. In this case the opportunity cost would be a death that would be deducted from the “ordinary” daily average death count.
When considering the number of deaths attributed to a disaster or a disease outbreak, perhaps it should also be taken into account what percentage of those deaths would have been likely to occur in the same time period.
Maybe you could use this to make a comparison between a nominal and real death toll. You could use this statistic to compare mass casualty events against each other.
I suppose the problem here is that such a model would be inherently ageist. However, there would be certain events where the real and nominal toll would be more aligned, such as the 1918 flu pandemic where stronger immune systems in young people generated powerful systemic inflammatory responses resulting in death. I was thinking that maybe warfare would have similarly close nominal and real death tolls but
The point is that we treat enough people first time that second time we can continue as normal and the system won't be overloaded the by people the second time due to immunity gained by others first time.
We're going to let it run it's course, we can't do anything about it anymore. The only thing we can do it slow the spread via quarantine/lockdowns, but even then most people will get it via summer because the spread is so fast
I think that the best strategy for that type of herd immunity would be to quarantine a section at a time, like start with the northwest and north east, and a couple southern areas(texas, oklahoma, new Mexico, Lousiana, not "the South"), to quarantine, then do the other others for the following month. THese way you keep the DMV(dc, Maryland, VA), North carolina(banks), california, chicago open for business while new york, washington, texas close done temporarily, then reverse style it
I don't know if I would do it, but that would be the best possible way
i guess the downside would be testing/resources, you would still have a large majority of the population that will need to get test all spread across the US, instead of just allocating your resources for a specific area at one time and helping that area out.
yea, shits fucked. I honestly do think that the best possible thing to do is to shutdown like 85% of the country, wait a month until most people aren't sick anymore, isolate those few people that are sick until they get better, close of international traveling until every country gets better, develop a vaccine, and then finally resume international traveling. Like, I just don't get why they wan't us to go back and forth for so long
We probably won't need a vaccine because everyone will have had it by this summer.
You guys have 9.4K cases right now, you can 10-20-even maybe 30x that, so that's between 100K and 300K cases right now in the US
Soon it'll be a million and after that the whole country will basically have it.
Unless you test 100% of the population, close borders and isolate the infected you simply can't stop this from infecting basically everyone
We're pretty close to that scenario already? Depending where you live non-essential business are closing.. Parts of California are dead. Downtown NYC is dead. Every student is out of school. Hotel chains are laying off everyone that is not management. Vices are selling fast where I live since nobody is working anymore.
From Singapore, half truths sorry.
That huge wave came from poor sobs who went on holiday and cannot afford to BNB, then comes back home.
TL;DR imported cases, cannot afford to overstay holiday, comes back COVID19
China reported no cases today. It will last longer but fear will disappear and eventually everyone get immunity by getting more or asymptomatic infection. Just need to quarantine nursing home. No visitors allowed.
Tell me why no one outside China and inside can criticize the CCP, tell me why American journalist cannot report there, tell me why every article, documentary reeks with CCP propaganda, tell me why the local government of Wuhan had to retract his orders to teach everyone of Wuhan to give gratitude to President Xi.
American journalism isn't perfect but at least we can shit on Trump when we see through his bs.
Covid 19 might as well be airborne AIDS. There's not going to be a cure, we're all going to get it, and ultimately the human life span will be hard capped at 80 years because of it. This is the new normal. We're fucked
Might just be the earths way of letting us know that we need to get rid of a few people and probably some animals as well. 8,9,10 billion people might be too much.
Choosing the old and weak is actually rather kind of old Mother Earth.
