Bitcoin is driving green energy innovation like obesity is driving research into diabetes. Sure, you might get a bit more resources devoted to development, but in the meantime, just about everyone involved is much worse off.
The VISA corporation consumed more than 182 gigawatts of electricity over a seven year period. As it stands, it would take Bitcoin almost 24 years to consume as much electricity as VISA did in seven. Supposedly, it’s Bitcoin that is the danger to the environment, not VISA. Yeah, right.
Doing how many transactions, moving how much value, for how many customers? Somehow that is missing in that comparison.
Am i wrong or are the units all mixed up?
Edit: The VISA source is in Gigajoules https://usa.visa.com/dam/VCOM/download/corporate-responsibility/visa-2016-corporate-responsibility-report.pdf, you can convert that to roughly 182 Gigawatt-hours. Which are 0.0029680 Gigawatt per one hour. So attacking bitcoin with 7.7 Gigawatt for one hour... or to flip the statement it would take ~24 HOURS to use as much energy as VISA did in 7 years. [(7 Years * 365 Days * 24 Hours) * (7.7 GW / 0.0029680 GW)]
The units HAVE to be mixed up. Absolutely have to be. There's no fucking way VISA uses as much energy as an entire country. That doesn't even make sense. Half the buildings in the country would have to be VISA buildings and the rest of the place just a bunch of card swipers.
How the fuck could VISA use the power of an entire country it doesn't make any sense. Bitcoin HAS to use more power.
This is the poor excuse climate change deniers have made whenever their alternative facts fail. They start claiming that the world doesn’t need to cut down on fossil fuels because they can “innovate” their way out of trouble.
They will literally say that without shame in the middle of a forest fire.
I'm on a diet. You see, I'm going to eat all the food in my house, then there won't be any food for me to eat, and I'll lose weight. Anyway see you later I'm headed to the grocery store, and then McDonald's, then KFC on the way back from McDonald's.
