I hear you on the difficult entry with Enhancement. I've read many of these stories multiple times, so I have a biased set of expectations with them.
What I enjoyed most about the beginning was that the story progression fit nicely with the main character's growth. As they learned more about the world they lived in, I learned more about the world/setting they were in. There were some aspects where I wanted to see/understand more, but the "main dish" seemed be the relationships in that family. In that sense, I felt I was able to get what I needed to understand about it.
After reading your comment I did some more thinking and yes I agree, it is about how this new technology can affect a family dynamic and people in it and what are pros and cons for getting a chip. As I said that this is my first impression just after I stop reading it and it was all fresh and didn't really have time to really think about it.
Now I'm reading second one and got me hook from the start, will report on it after I finish it :)
Can't wait to read your feedback! Some of the authors have been tweeting to each other about the stories, which is cool. Tananarive is very very approachable. Feel free to ask her questions about the story Enhancement on there. She's pretty cool people.
I read the first story (Enhancement), I would score it 3/5 (goodreads scoring). It is really hard to review short stories since you are missing a lot of character and world building in it. This one didn't really have a good start, first few pages you fill quite lost, because there is no explanation about anything that is going on, and if you didn't read universe guide you would be even more confused.
But the overall good first story to give a feel of this world and what is coming.
This is my first impression, I have a feeling that when I will read all of them will maybe as a hole make a lot better and these short stories are basically world/character building blocks
