RT @blakehounshell: Epidemiologists are warning that Florida’s slowness in closing beaches created a situation in which spring break partiers spread the virus all over the country https://t.co/biYQoA1LSV
With many colleges suspending classes, spring breakers (especially scholarship athletes) will be bringing their infected selves back to places like Lower Rectum Montana and Itchy Scrotum Kansas, that might ordinarily been spared.
I think spring break has a lot to do with why the federal government is so slow to respond to the crisis.
Red states do not want to shut down for the public health emergency, specifically Florida, Texas, Louisiana and South Carolina. Those states are where millions of college kids go on spring break and spend billions with local businesses; it’s huge for the southern US coastal economy, so those state governors would have hell to pay if they closed all bars, restaurants and non-essential businesses like other states have done.
Those state governors are pressuring Trump not to announce a coordinated national response because losing spring break will cause a lot of economic hardship in their states and could threaten their re-election prospects. No doubt they have made clear to Trump that it would also hurt his chances of winning those states in November.
All of Trumps actions make perfect sense if you look at it not as incompetence, but as part of a general re-election campaign strategy. Delaying, or failing to have any national response will make the crisis infinitely worse, but Trump does not care if a million people in blue states die because the virus spreads. What he cares about is winning Florida and Texas in November, and those states want the spring break Miami/Daytona Beach/Corpus Christi/wherever dollars. If that money doesn’t come in, it hurts Trumps re-election chances.
TLDR; spring break generates a lot of revenue for southern states. Trump doesn’t care if the virus spreads, as long as it’s mostly blue staters who die.
The US had the virus the same day as Korea. You decide who has dealt with it and who hasn’t. This Trumpvirus is going to whip through the states like a whirlwind. It will make Italy look like a walk in the park. Stay safe.
How is everything always the young people's fault? They were in school in tightly packed classes for weeks while our government pretended the virus wouldn't affect us. The government gave this disease more opportunity to spread than any vacationing. Winter break sees a lot more movement of people (not just students too), and who knows whether or not it spread at that time.
